Next Thursday (9/23) is the official start of the fall season however, it seems like fall right now. So, today I give you "factoids" about fall.

• Trees take water from the ground through their roots & take carbon dioxide from the air. They also use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar which together is called photosynthesis.

• Because of its wide verity of trees, the Eastern United States, especially the North Eastern U.S., is one of the best places in the world for viewing fall colors.

• Bright red & purple colors come from anthocyanin (an-thuh-'si-uh-nuhn) pigments, like in maple leaves, are formed from trapped glucose.

• Brown colors come from a waste product called tannin, orange colors comes from carotene ('kar-uh-teen) & the yellows from xanthophyll ('zan-thuh-fil)

• The leave colors red, yellow & brown are in the leaves all year long & only become exposed when the green chlorophyll disappears in the fall.

• Mulching fall leaves where they fall lets them decompose so that they can release their minerals back to the underlying soil.

• Maples, Oaks, Elms, Birch & Ash trees are just a few of the trees that give spectacular colors during the Autumn season.

• Fall colors are best when late summer is dry & autumn has bright sunny days & cool nights below 40 °F.

• Fall days become shorter & many plants stop making food. That is when the green chlorophyll starts to disappear from the leaves.

• Most leaves fall from trees because the ends of the branch are sealed off near the leaf stem to protect the tree through the long winter months.

• Composting fall leaves is an excellent way to improve yard & garden soils. Mixing green & brown materials together is the basic rule.

• An acre of trees can grow 4,000 pounds of wood in a year, using 5,880 pounds of carbon dioxide & giving off 4,280 pounds of oxygen in the process.

Allstate insurance has released it's annual "Allstate America's Best Driver Report" and though Cleveland was not in the top ten, the city fared well coming in at #37 on the list.

According to the report, if you drive in Cleveland your likely to have an accident every 10.8 years.

So, where was "America's Best Drivers?" Ft.Collins, Colorado where they where 31.2% less likely to have an accident than the national average.

The worst, Philadelphia, PA where they were over 53% more likely to have an accident than the national average.

With Ohio State whipping Marshall the start of the college football season is underway so today I give you factoids on College Football!

The first college football game took place in 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers University. Each team had 25 players on the field, and no forward passing was allowed. Rutgers won by a score of 6 to 4.

College football’s largest margin of victory came in 1916, when Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland by a score of 222 to 0. The game was cut short by 15 minutes.

Field goals in college football were originally worth five points. This was decreased to four points in 1904 and three points in 1909.

The frst Orange Bowl was played in 1935 between the University of Miami and Manhattan College. To save money, the Manhattan College team took a three-day boat ride to Miami.

Irvine “Cotton” Warburton is the only member of the College Football Hall of Fame to receive an Academy Award. He won for his film editing work on 1964’s Mary Poppins.

Chief Osceola, the Florida State mascot who rides out and plants a flaming spear at midfield before each home game, has been approved by Florida’s Seminole Indian Tribe.

In the 1940s, college bowl games included the Raisin Bowl, Salad Bowl and Oil Bowl.

Michigan holds the record for the most bowl appearances (31).

How much would you pay for say...John Lennon's toliet? (supposedly clean)

How about over $14,000 that's how much the porclin chain went for at auction on Saturday.

Here's the story...The toilet once resided in Berkshire's Tittenhurst Park, where Lennon lived from 1969 to 1971. At some point during his tenure there, Lennon had the toilet replaced with a newer one. He instructed builders to "put some flowers in it or something."

Builder John Hancock instead stored it in his shed for 40 years. The toilet went to auction after his recent death.

The toilet was only expected to fetch about $1,500 instead...$14,470.

Steeler's Defensive back, Troy Polamalu's hair is now worth a million dollars.

Head and Shoulders announced Tuesday that it has insured Polamalu’s trademark curly mane for $1 million through Loyd's of London. No details were released on what would have to happen to Troy's hair in order for anyone to cash in on the policy.

Mariah Carey famously took out a billion dollar policy on her legs in 2006. Bruce Springsteen’s voice is insured to the tune of $6 million and Tom Jones reportedly insured his chest hair (yes, chest hair) for upwards of $6 million.

Where a 61-year old man has been ticketed for trespassing and banned from a supermarket after he told a deli-clerk he likes “large breast.” But the man swears he meant Chicken breast and nothing else.

It's not as if he tried to buy 15 items in the 12-item express checkout line.

A 31 year-old bride-to-be was arrested for drunk driving on her way home from her bachelorette party and just hours before her wedding.
Her blood-alcohol level was tested at .146. She told the WSP that she had been arrested for drunk driving once before.
The woman was released to a taxi so she could get to her wedding, according to WSP spokeswoman Christina Martin.
SHE GOT OFF!!! Note to self...if you ever get popped for DUI tell them that you are getting married and leaving bachelorette party.

Before the first day of school do you do the whole "back to school" clothes shopping thing?

My opinion...the first few weeks of school, my kids are allowed to wear shorts and since at the beginning of summer I bought them all new shorts and shirts I just have them wear those summer clothes for the first couple weeks then I but clothes for the fall.

Mine in to qualify for and run the Boston Marathon. (Next shot for qualifying is in Columbus October, 17th.

I have a good friend who has a very unusual "Bucket list" item. He is a very successful man, who loved what he did for a profession and is enjoying retirement but one thing he has always wanted to do is deliver Pizza's. Yes, his "bucket list" item includes delivering pizza's!

Browns lost there first pre-season game on Saturday night...but that's not important.

What's important is for me to find out the answer to the trivia question WKYC Channel 3 was asking during the game.

The question...Who was the last Browns Player to wear #19 during a a regular season game. I know it couldn't 't have been Bernie Kosar because he was the color commentator for the the game and that would have been WAY to easy.

Young women are much better than men at spotting a cute baby

Reiner Sprengelmeyer of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland compiled images of male and female baby faces that had been rated prior to the study as cute and less cute, and used a computer program to come up with an average cute and average less-cute face for each gender.

The study found that women of childbearing age (between 19 and 51 years old) are four times better than men of all ages at picking out the cutest babies.

Noted chicken separator Pilgrim's Pride Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection on December 1, they supplied roughly one quarter of the 24 billion "wing segments" that were eaten last year.

Super Bowl weekend accounts for 5% of all wing consumption during the year, with over 1 billion wings eaten in all.

Wow, not even the Chicken Wing industry is recession Prof. I'm sure this will trickle down and have an adverse effect on the celery industry!

Well, Judson is back with "The Eveloution Of Dance II" check it out.

When the first Evolution of Dance video hit the Internet, it took off like a rocket and became one of the biggest viral videos of all time. I'm thinkingwith yesterday's snow and with the snow expected tonight, it is going to be a great weekend for sledding the kiddos. With that said, today's "FACTOIDS" are about the sled!

Sleds originally were an important transportation tool that facilitated the movement of goods and people on frozen surfaces where wheels often did not work. In fact, sleds were used to transport heavy cannon in the early years of the Revolution to oust the British from Boston.

flexible Flyers are the most often recognized brand of sled. The U S Patent Office has a website that specifically recognizes S L Allen and his patents.

The the flexible flyer sleds had flat runners until about 1907, wooden bumpers until 1915, and straight runners until 1935. An articulated steering bumper came out around 1928,

"Standard Novelty Works" of Duncannon, PA made the famous Lightning Guider sleds from 1904-1990. The Duncannon factory where the used to make those sleds is now the home of a sled musuem called "The Old Sled Works."

Donald Peters had a 20-year tradition of buying lottery tickets for he and his wife Charlotte. On Nov.1 Donald bought two Connecticut Lottery tickets at a local 7-Eleven store later that day, the 79-year-old suffered a fatal heart attack while working in his yard.

The winning ticket Donald Peters bought bought on Nov. 1 for the Dec. 2 drawing and was among several tickets Charlotte Peters has set aside as she and their three children and two grandchildren coped with his sudden death.

While at a local grocery store Charlotte had the ticket checked and that's when she learned her husband had purchased a 10-million dollar winning lottery ticket.

Charlotte Peters has 60 days to decide whether to take a $6 million pre-tax lump sum payment or stretch the winnings into 21 yearly payments of almost $477,300 each.

Facts about the NFL playoffs which begin tomorrow with the Wild Card games.

The first ever playoff games were played in 1970.the AFC Divisional playoffs kicked off on December 26, 1970 when the Baltimore Colts Led by Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas, 17-0 to advance to the AFC Championship Game. The Oakland Raiders defeated the Miami Dolphins 21-14 in the other AFC divisional playoff game.

The first ever NFC playoff games featured the Dallas Cowboys defeating the Detroit Lions 5-0. The following day, the San Francisco 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings 17-14 to advance to the NFC Championship Game.

Baltimore and Dallas met in Superbowl V with the Colts winning 16-13.

When the expansion Houston Texans entered the NFL in 2002, the playoffs expanded to 12 teams total.

SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS!

During this past presidential election we heard so much about how "small business" is the back bone of this country and if our country is to be strong these small business's to succeed.

THEN WHY DO SO MANY OF US GO DIRECTLY TO THE BIG BOX STORES?

If what we heard about small business is true, then we must support these company's. I encourage everyone to take a look at the mom and pop hardware stores, locally owned gas stations, clothing stores, appliance store, restaurants etc.

I've heard the excuses, these small stores "don't have what I need." "There prices are to high." "It's not convenient!" These excuses are weakening what we are calling the "back bone" of our country.

Whether you live Ashtabula, Lake or Geauga counties go shop these locally owned stores, I think you will find that they are priced competitively, they have to be. And if they don't have what you need, ask I'm sure they can get if for you. And most importantly, at these smaller locally owned stores you will find customer service you won't find at your bigger franchises.

I challenge everyone to take one week, or one weekend and do your business only with locally owned companies. You may pay .05 more per gallon on gas but, I bet you can get free air for your tires. Heck the may even have an attendant check your tire pressure for you.

The menu may be smaller but, I bet the food is home cooked and not pre-prepared.
They may not have the bolt or the part you need on their shelves but I bet they can get it for you and I bet it comes from another small business!

Try it for one week or one weekend...shop locally owned business only!

Ken Mink, a 73-year-old full-time student, scored two points Monday night in Roane State Community College's 93-42 victory over King College's junior varsity.
